Company Profile:
An international scientific society that fosters the transfer of knowledge and practices to sustain global soils. Based in Madison, WI, and founded in 1936, SSSA is the professional home for 6,000+ members dedicated to advancing the field of soil science. It provides information about soils in ...
The breakdown of organic compounds within an organism.
Industry:Earth science
The interchange of elements between organic and inorganic states in a soil or other substrate through the action of living organisms. It results from the biological decomposition of organic compounds with the liberation of inorganic materials (mineralization) and the utilization of inorganic materials with synthesis of microbial tissue (immobilization).
Industry:Earth science
The crescent-shaped, often ephemeral body of standing water situated by the side of a stream in the abandoned channel (oxbow) of a meander after the stream formed a neck cutoff and the ends of the original bend were silted up.
Industry:Earth science
The metabolic process whereby electrons are transferred from a reduced compound (usually organic) to an inorganic acceptor molecule other than oxygen. The most common acceptors are carbonate, sulfate, and nitrate.
Industry:Earth science
The process of comparing model simultations to observed responses of the real world system, that is , comparing predictions to observations. In the strictest sense, validation involves comparison of model solutions to well-defined experimental measurements using independent estimates of all parameters in the model.
Industry:Earth science
The process whereby the exchangeable sodium content of a soil is increased.
Industry:Earth science
Ultisols that have a high content of organic carbon. Humults are not saturated with water for periods long enough to limit their use for most crops.
Industry:Earth science
The process of developing nutrient application recommendations from soil test concentrations, and other soil, crop, economic, environmental, and climatic information.
Industry:Earth science
The solid phases constituents of the soil. Often used to refer to the soil pore system within aggregates.
Industry:Earth science
The sodium adsorption ratio of a water adjusted for the precipitation or dissolution of Ca2+ that is expected to occur where a water reacts with alkaline earth carbonates within a soil.
