Katniss, actress Jennifer Lawrence, is a resident of District 12. Growing up, her father taught her how to hunt, how to survive with nature, and most importantly how to use a bow. Her father died before the story begins as a result of a mine explosion, leaving her in charge of caring for her sister and sickly depressed mother. The annual Hunger Games is about to begin, and the reaping process is underway. First to be chosen is Katniss's younger sister primrose. Katniss is so surprised and flustered, she volunteers to take her place. Now the games begin. Katniss is one of 24 children (2 from each district) chosen from the reaping to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Trained by her father to survive in the outdoors, she is well equipped in knowledge and skills.
