Neurogenesis is the process by which neural cells (neurons and glial cells) are generated. Neurogenesis is most active during pre-natal development, and it is responsible for populating the growing brain with neurons and glial cells. Recently neurogenesis was shown to continue in several small parts of the brain of adult mammals: the hippocampus and the subventricular zone.

postmitotic neuron

A postmitotic neuron is a neuron that has exited the cell cycle. After exiting the cell cycle, cells are considered immature neurons. Postmitotic neurons undergo the process of neuronal differentiation (extension of axon and dendrites, formation of synaptic connections). Postmitotic neurons also pass through a late maturation phase characterized by increased synaptic plasticity.

Postmitotic nevrona je nevrona, ki zapusti celičnega ciklusa. Po izhodu iz celičnega ciklusa, se celice štejejo nezrelih nevronov. Postmitotic nevroni opravijo postopek nevronske diferenciacije (razširitev axon in dendriti), nastanek sinaptične povezave. Postmitotic nevroni tudi skozi pozno fazo zorenja značilna povečana sinaptične plastičnosti.
