take-down pin

In the field of rifles, take-down levers and tabs are rare and most rely on proprietry disasembly methods. One of the most popular methods for adding a quick disassembly function to a rifle is by using one or more take-down pins. The take-down pin is a simple shaped pin wirh a retaining flare one one side which slides through the firearm at critical junctures to secure the receiver, upper and barrel. They are removed by tapping the non-flared end with a soft punch, or with a specifically made tool. Re-assembly of the firearm simply requires the re-insertion of the pin, which may be done by hand. Notable uses of take-down pins include the AR15, M4 and M16 families of rifle.
