griffin

A mythical animal with the head and wings of an eagle and the body and tail of a lion. As a hybrid of two power animals that are considered kings of their respective species, the griffin is regarded as an especially powerful and majestic creature. Griffins are known for guarding treasure and priceless possessions.

The griffin is thought to be born in the Hyperborean mountains or in Ethiopia, while others say the animal was an ancient misconception derived from the fossilized remains of the Protoceratops found in gold mines in the Altai mountains of Scythia, in present day southeastern Kazakhstan, or in Mongolia. Griffins are the enemy of the horse and they are strong enough to carry away an entire live ox.
