Extreme metal is a loosely defined umbrella term for a number of related metal music sub-genres that have developed since the early 1980s. The term usually refers to genres with harsher and more aggressive styles of metal with often violent or unconventional lyrical themes. Thus, it is mostly associated with genres like thrash metal, black metal and death metal.
