Chiwoniso
She is one of Zimbabwe's best known singers. She became a star by playing and singing to a 'mbira', which is a metallic thumb piano, traditionally played by men. The singer, song writer is the daughter of a famous mbira player, Dumisani Maraire. At age 15 she formed a 'Afro-fusion' hip hop group called Peace of Ebony, and later joined a band called The Storm, led by famous guitarist Andy Brown, who later became her husband, was one of Zimbabwe's greatest bands. She went solo in 2004 and made international stardom, enabling world wide tours. She spoke out against police brutality in Zimbabwe, and was honored by Radio France for her album 'Ancient Voices".
Sadly she died in July 2013 of suspected pneumonia.
