This iconic landmark opened in 1883. It has been a national historic landmark since 1964 and is featured in countless books, and movies. It is used by pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers to go to and from Manhattan. Nearly 30 people died during its 13 year long construction, including its original architect John A. Roebling. In the year of its opening (1884), to ease the public's fear about the sturdiness, P.T. Barnum led a parade of his prized circus elephants over it 6,000 ft long span.
