Three states have already signed driverless (aka autonomous) cars into law; California, Nevada and Florida. Google has been testing theirs for a while, and as of a year ago (August 2012) had logged over 300,000 miles with only two incidents.

The Google driverless car is a project by Google that involves developing technology for autonomous cars. The software powering Google's cars is called Google Chauffeur.
