V.V. Giri was appointed the acting president of India on May 3 1969 after the untimely demise of Zakir Hussain. His term ended on July 20 1969. Incidentally he was also the Vice-president between 1967 and 1969. He was conferred with the Bharat Ratna award in 1975 for his contributions in the field of Public Affairs.
